As a college graduate, I understand firsthand the challenges of balancing coursework, exams, a part-time job, and home duties. It can be challenging to manage time effectively when there are just so many things to do. However, with the right time management strategies, it’s possible to stay on top of everything without feeling overwhelmed. I’ll share some of the most effective time management tips I’ve used to balance my own academic and personal responsibilities.
Identify Time Wasters and Set Goals
To start, it’s important to identify the time-wasters that are contributing to your stress and anxiety. This can be difficult, but it’s important to be honest with yourself about how much time you’re spending on things that don’t really matter. Once you’ve identified the time-wasters, it’s important to set goals for reducing or eliminating them.
Create a Schedule
Next, you should create a schedule that outlines all of your commitments and obligations. This schedule should include all of your classes, work shifts, and other regular commitments. You should also schedule time for studying, homework, and other assignments.
Then, make sure to schedule time for personal tasks like cooking, cleaning, and exercise.
Be Flexible and Realistic
It’s important to be flexible and realistic with your goals. While you’ve set that schedule for now, go over it again and make sure that these goals seem attainable.
For example, you might set a goal of studying for an upcoming exam for three hours each night, but if you struggle to study for more than an hour at a time, it’s okay to adjust your goal. Likewise, if you find that you’re regularly missing deadlines, it’s okay to reduce your goal or take short breaks during the week to catch up.
Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes – as long as you learn from them and continue progressing towards your goals.
Use a Planner or Calendar App
Once your schedule has been created, you’ll need somewhere to keep it all organized. Using a planner or calendar app to keep track of deadlines, assignments, and other important events is super helpful. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don’t forget anything important.
There are many different planner and calendar apps available, so choose one that works best for you. Personally, I like using ClickUp to keep track of all my assignments and Google Calendar to manage all appointments, meetings, and to keep track of important dates. But if you prefer other management systems like Notion or Trello, then use those! Find which tool works best for how you like to schedule things.
Prioritize Your Tasks
When you have a lot on your plate, it’s important to prioritize your tasks so that you can focus on what’s most important. Start by identifying the tasks that are most urgent and important, and tackle those first. This might include studying for an upcoming exam or completing a major assignment.
Once you’ve completed your most important tasks, you can move on to less urgent or less important tasks. This might include cleaning your apartment or running errands.
Break Tasks into Manageable Chunks
When you’re facing a large or complex task, it can be overwhelming to tackle it all at once. Instead, try breaking the task into smaller, more manageable chunks.
Let’s say you have a research paper due in two weeks, break it down into small tasks like research, outlining, and writing. By breaking the task into smaller pieces, you’ll be able to make progress more quickly and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Get Help from Others
While you can’t get someone to study for you, you can lean on others to help break down other school or life things you need to do. For example, if you have an exam coming up and prefer to make study guides for each chapter, team up with someone else in your class and alternate chapters or topics to make guides for. This allows you to get all the materials you need to prepare for an exam but reduces the amount of work you need to put in to get it done.
Or if you have roommates, you could discuss sharing the responsibility of dinner together. Either you can meal prep together over the weekend or alternate nights to cook. This can help take the pressure off of both of you to balance school, work, and personal needs.
Another important time management strategy is to avoid multitasking and only focus on one task at a time. Many people believe that they can accomplish more by doing multiple things at once, but research shows that multitasking can actually decrease productivity and increase stress levels.
When you try to juggle multiple tasks at once, your brain has to constantly switch gears, which can cause you to lose focus and make more mistakes. This can lead to a decrease in the quality of your work and can also make it take longer to complete each task.
Instead, try to focus on one task at a time, and give it your full attention until it’s done. This may mean turning off your phone, closing your email, and blocking out any other distractions. By giving each task your full attention, you can complete it more efficiently and effectively, which will save you time in the long run.
One of the biggest challenges of time management is avoiding distractions. When you’re studying or working on an assignment, it’s easy to get sidetracked by social media, text messages, or anything else.
To minimize distractions, try turning off your phone or putting it in another room while you work. You can also use browser extensions like StayFocusd to block distracting websites while you work.
It also helps to be in a productive environment, so go wherever that looks like for you. If you need absolute silence, visit the library to start your work. Prefer to be around others who are getting things done? Set yourself up in a coffee shop for a few hours.
It’s important to take breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge. When you’re working on a long-term project or studying for an exam, taking regular breaks can actually help you stay more focused and productive.
Try taking a 10-minute break every hour or so to stretch, walk around, or do something else to take your mind off your work. Or you can test out the Pomodoro technique, where you do 25 minutes of focused work and then a 5-minute break to recharge. Test out what works best for you and doesn’t burn you out or take you out of the zone.
Get Enough Sleep
Finally, it’s important to get enough sleep to stay healthy and focused. When you’re balancing a lot of different responsibilities, it can be tempting to sacrifice sleep to get everything done. However, this can actually be counterproductive in the long run.
Make sure to prioritize sleep by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night to ensure that you’re well-rested and ready to tackle your tasks.
By following the time management strategies outlined in this post, you can stay organized, focused, and productive, even when faced with a busy schedule.
It’s worth noting that no two students have the same schedule, so it’s important to adapt these strategies to your own needs and preferences. For example, some students may prefer to study early in the morning, while others may work better in the evenings. You also have to consider your own self-care. It’s easy to get so focused on your academic and work responsibilities that you neglect your own physical and emotional needs. Make sure to schedule time for relaxation and socializing with friends and family. This will help you stay healthy and happy, which in turn will make you more productive and focused when it’s time to get back to work.
